The catholic flag of sri lanka was approved by the catholic bishops’ conference of sri lanka in the year 2000. It was blessed and hoisted for the frist time at the premises of the national seminary, kandy. It is a tri-colour flag of yellow, white and blue. the first two colours yellow and white, are from the papal flag designating the loyalty of the church in sri lanka to the universal catholic church of whitch it forms a part. On the white background is the image of the historic cross of anuradhapura. It is the most ancient symbol of christianity discovered in sri lanka . This image was found engraved on a pillar believed to be that of a church of that period. The design is belived to have been carved by St.Thomas the apostle during his stay there. It is depicted in blue to signity the deep devotion of the sri lankan catholics to mother mary.
